A long stretch of sandy beach with mature established dunes and sandstone cliffs. This is a west facing beach and so receives the full impact of the Atlantic. Easy access with plenty of parking and local services on hand. The beach offers both family-friendly sand and significant areas of rock pools. These are situated at both the north and south ends of the beach. Car parks, ice cream, toilets, everything you need for a family day out.
Black Rock is an isolated outcrop that stands in the middle distance of the picture. The rock marks the start of the pools. The area of pools is vast and the underlying geology of the area ensures lots of crevices to explore. Expect to find lots of anemones and fish, snails and seaweeds but you will need to look hard. There are few rocks to turn over, the sea is so rough here they are taken away so get down low and check the wave cut gullies looking under the weed. Sections beyond the main areas look interesting to explore. Jagged rocks dominate and so anything could be lurking in these, but watch those tides the cliffs offer no way out so stranding is a high risk once off the main beach pools.
A very popular area but a walk over the rocks will give you a good quiet rock pooling session.
